Fellowship is among the highest honors the ASLA bestows on members and recognizes the contributions of these individuals to their profession and society at large based on their works, leadership and management, knowledge, and service. The designation of Fellow is conferred on individuals in recognition of exceptional accomplishments over a sustained period of time. Individuals considered for this distinction must be full members of ASLA in good standing for at least ten years and must be recommended to the Council of Fellows by the Executive Committee of their local chapter, the Executive Committee of the ASLA, or the Executive Committee of the Council of Fellows.

Election is based on professional excellence and outstanding accomplishments in one of four categories:

Works
Mastery of design in significant works which have advanced the art, stewardship, and social responsibility of landscape architecture.

Leadership/Management
Exemplary leadership, administration, and management of people, projects, policies, and/or programs that have significantly advanced the practice of landscape architecture, and/or the public recognition of issues regarding the design, planning, or management of the land.

Knowledge
The creation of significant new knowledge that advances the profession of landscape architecture or the communication of knowledge to others with exceptional effect.

Service
Service activities sustained over an extended period of time that have significantly advanced the profession and promoted landscape architecture in the eyes of the public, and that serve as examples for other local, regional, national, or international efforts.
