UMN School of Architecture Complexity: Dutch and American Housing Symposium

dutch-1000

This fall, the School of Architecture is hosting the symposium “Complexity: Dutch and American Housing.” Based on the book, Complex Housing: Designing for Density by Professor Julia Robinson, the symposium is designed to expose a select American audience to the values and ideas inherent in Dutch Complex Housing—a highly successful model of housing development.

WHEN: Friday, October 6 through Sunday, October 8, 2017

WHERE: Rapson Hall, University of Minnesota, 89 Church Street SE (East Bank), Minneapolis, MN

RSVP: Registration for the symposium is now open. To register, visit z.umn.edu/complexitysymposium.

After a half-century of experimentation in social, mixed-use, and mixed-occupancy housing, America is still looking for a better model of housing development. Based on the book Complex Housing: Designing for Density by Professor Julia Robinson, FAIA, “Complexity: Dutch and American Housing” will explore the values inherent in Dutch Complex Housing and how to apply these values to American housing developments.

At the symposium 12 Dutch presenters, representing four projects, will showcase best housing practices governing the development of Dutch housing. In return, local politicians, designers, developers, and builders will host field trips to significant housing projects in the Twin Cities. By providing an opportunity for substantive exchange between housing professionals from the Netherlands and the United States, the symposium aims to help both groups develop new housing practices for each country.

An exhibition, “Complex Housing: Designing for Density,” will also run concurrently at the Goldstein Museum of Design from September 2, 2017 through January 9, 2018.
